Captain Kalmus brought this training idea back from the Calgary FD (Canada). We use this hose for Fire Ground Survival (Saving Our Own) and other evolutions where we follow a "charged hose line". In the past we used air to charge the hose but there were always issues with leaks or missing connections. The absorbent also creates a more realistic feel compared to air.
Of course, you can use water but sometimes we train in environments that need to stay dry or we do not have power or an engine.
We hang the hose from our training tower and fill it with absorbent and then fill the ends with can spray foam insulation.
