Open Nozzle Completely

If the video does not play click here http://youtu.be/7tIv-ZxCa4U

This video shows a minor issue we've come across with opening our nozzles completely. When we notice a bad stream we often think of other issues but sometimes it's simply a partially opened bail.

Poor Stream Troubleshooting-
Nozzle completely open?
Last 2-3' of hose straight?
Proper pressure?
Split ball valve with no stream shaper?
Debris is line?

Apparatus Placement

I like to talk about this after every fire with all the crews on scene.  We have a problem sometimes in our dept. of blocking access for Truck companies.  It is a good thing to think and talk about.  Apparatus positioning should be based on capability and the job at hand.  The Chief's car or a police vehicle have no reason to take the address or A side.  With that being said neither does the first Engine for the most part if we pull past and leave the spot for the Ladder it will make us both successful.  You cannot stretch a Ladder.  We have upgraded our staffing on the Rescues also but the capabilities of their apparatus has not changed so think about where they should be parked.  Does the task you are completing involve your unit or just the tools?  These are all discussion points and I want to hear your feedback.

In our department we do not lay in with the first 2 engines, they go to the scene for aggressive attack.  The 3rd engine is water supply unless we deviate.  Thought process being anywhere from 1000 to 1500 gallons of properly placed water will extinguish most fires.

How does your department handle apparatus placement?

Does your department have these issues?

Remember talk to crews around you don't expect that you are all on the same page if you haven't discussed this critical issue it could save a life someday.

Quick way to free someone trapped under a car.

Quick Drill- Man under.
Improvise, Adapt & Overcome. FDNY Eng. 66 doing a vehicle lift with 2.5" roll ups & a 24' ext. ladder. What other techniques have you guys tried ?
Thanks FDNY E-66 / L-61 for the photo.

This is great quick method for removing a person from underneath a vehicle if airbags are not available. Use two 2 1/2" roll ups and a 24' extension ladder. This method is designed to raise the vehicle just enough to remove the victim. Share this and tell what you think. We could have used this the other day, had a car roll off a jack on to a guys foot.

Here is the link to the Milwaukee cut article.  Listen this is not every house but when you are practicing ventilation try it as a tool for adverse or steep conditions.

Ventilation

here is a link http://youtu.be/qs-LymaOGdg

Not sure what the ventilation technique was here but they got lucky no one was hurt.  Are we still putting ourselves in these positions because of lack of training or is it more a situational awareness issue?  What are your thoughts?  I was in a truck school one time and some Truck 33 guys from LA city said they will put straight ladders in windows in RIC situations.  If you run into a ladder in their department you have an exit path to a window.  First floor only hahaha.

Remember there are many ways to vent a structure if you are not accessing ventilation before completing it you are setting yourself up for failure.

Stockton fire attack

If the video does not play click here http://youtu.be/bbn7BD7DW90

Look at the Forcible Entry technique on the Screen security door also.  This can be accomplished with a NY hook Axe PIG ETC.  It is easier then getting the tool behind.  He had a plan and executed it.  Nice work Stockton.
